Gross domestic product (GDP) is a measure of the value of all finished goods and services produced within a country's borders during a specified period, typically a year. It represents the total economic output of a nation. On the other hand, gross national product (GNP) is the total value of all final goods and services produced by a country's residents, irrespective of their location, usually within a year.
The key difference between GDP and GNP lies in the inclusion of income earned by residents abroad and the exclusion of income earned by foreign residents within a country. GDP only accounts for production that occurs within a country's borders, regardless of who is performing the production, while GNP takes into consideration the nationality of the producer.
For instance, if a foreign company produces and earns income within a country, that income will contribute to the country's GDP. However, it will not be included in GNP since the income is not generated by the country's residents. Similarly, if a domestic company produces and earns income abroad, that income is included in GNP but not GDP.
In summary, while both GDP and GNP are measures of a country's economic performance, GDP focuses on production within a country's borders, while GNP takes into account income earned by a country's residents, regardless of where it occurs.
