The Potala Palace was built by the Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo, in the 7th century. However, the current structure that stands today was mainly constructed during the 17th century by the fifth Dalai Lama, Lozang Gyatso. The Potala Palace was built as a winter residence for the Dalai Lamas, who were the spiritual leaders of Tibet. It also served as a political center and the administrative headquarters of the Tibetan Government. The palace is located in Lhasa, Tibet and is considered a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism and culture. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts thousands of tourists every year.
